Abstract

Tourism globally when undertaken using boats is not always as safe as we might expect. Our western
culture makes us think that just as international safety regulations are scrupulously enforced in our
countries, they are similarly enforced in other parts of the world, which is not true and also poses a risk
to the people who travel as passengers in those areas. As tourists, we sometimes lose sight of what is
safe and what is not safe in certain parts of the world. Our analysis tries to analyse to what extent there
is a relationship between accidents on passenger ships and the flag they fly, because if this relationship
is high, we have a problem in coastal shipping and therefore measures for international travel such as
those enacted by the IMO are not effective.
