Navigating Leadership: A Narrative Inquiry into the People Management Skills of Chief Mariners

Abstract

This narrative inquiry examined the people management skills of Chief Mariners aboard ships. Drawing on in-depth interviews with five Chief Mariners and other maritime professionals, the study explored how these leaders manage challenging situations, build a positive work environment, and motivate their crew for optimal performance within the unique constraints of a shipboard setting. The research highlights key skills, including effective communication, empowerment, conflict resolution, and decision-making under pressure. It also addresses the unique challenges of shipboard leadership, such as isolation, limited resources, and crew fatigue, and how Chief Mariners adapt their leadership styles to overcome them. Ultimately, this study offers valuable insights into the essential people management skills required for effective maritime leadership, providing lessons that can be applied to leadership in other dynamic environments. It also serves as a basis for developing curricula in related fields.
