Satisfaction survey for the evaluation of training in a modern bridge simulator. A User Satisfaction Study in Relation to STCW Convention and Code Requirements

Resumen

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of simulator training within the STCW Convention & Code as a way of improving user skills, and as a basis for behavioral change between human beings to reduce the Occurrence of human dispositions which lead to mariner accidents. Based on this, a survey-based questionnaire was used to assess simulator-training, satisfaction levels for simulator training among maritime professionals, and students were sustained with a series of debriefing sessions after the training. The questionnaire consisted of four parts that the respondents were asked to evaluate: : (a) how simulator training helps prevent common errors that cause marine accidents, (b) how it helps prevent human behaviors or actions that cause marine accidents, (c) how much it contributes to correcting errors that could cause accidents, and (d) an overall assessment of whether simulation training can reduce accident rates. The analysis supports that the majority of respondents agreed that the training would enhance the comprehensive understanding of bridge and engine room operations, phases automation, enabling decision making, communication and elimination, and correction of errors (active and passive) were identified in the analysis. Most of the respondents confirmed that this training through simulators can eliminate human errors, prevent stress or fatigue, gaining valuable knowledge and skills would lead to compliance with the STCW Convention & Code, providing security for their work on ship.
